A phoned-in bomb threat at the Maui Mall Megaplex prompted theater management to evacuate approximately 280 patrons about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, according to Maui Police Department spokes-man Lt. Wayne Ibarra.
The manager called 911, and police and firefighters responded to the scene, he said.
After 8 p.m., police and firefighters searched the theater complex as a precaution, Ibarra said.
The Kahului Fire Station's Engine 10 was on standby at the scene, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
At 8:38 p.m., the complex had been checked and declared safe, emergency dispatchers reported.
A customer said that theater patrons were herded outside near the Maui Mall's fountain, where they were given vouchers allowing them to see a movie at another time.
