Lieutenant governor makes it official

January 4, 2013
The Maui News
Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui was sworn in Thursday morning by Hawaii Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald on Oahu. The event in the governor’s office was ceremonial. The former Maui lawmaker and state Senate president actually took office on Dec. 27, the day he accepted the job. As state Senate president, Tsutsui, 41, was in line for the post following Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s appointment of Brian Schatz to the U.S. Senate to replace the late Daniel K. Inouye, who died Dec. 17. Thursday was the deadline for Central Maui Democrats to apply for Tsutsui’s open state Senate seat. Maui County Democrats will be meeting Saturday to come up with a list of up to three names to submit to the governor, who will make the final selection.
