Awana club to start 2013 on Wednesday
Awana, a Christian-based club for children, will launch into the new year beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Pukalani Baptist Church, across from Pukalani Superette.
Children in three age groups, from kindergarten through the 8th grade, will have fun playing games, making new friends, competing for awards and learning to apply God's Word in everyday life situations.
The club will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

North Shore Church in Haiku established
A new church, North Shore Church, has been established in Haiku.
The nondenominational Christian church meets every Sunday at 9 a.m. in the Haiku Elementary School cafeteria, 105 Pauwela Road.

Open house slated for Maui Lani center
The Maui Lani Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 12, according to an announcement.
The center is at 1300 Maui Lani Parkway.

Professor Machida will talk Wednesday
Hiroshima University professor Soho Machida will give a free public lecture Wednesday titled "Seeking World Peace from a Buddhist Perspective."
The event will be held at 7 p.m. at Kahului Jodo Mission, 291 S. Puunene Ave.
Machida is a professor at the Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences and director of the Center for Ecological Peace Studies at Hiroshima University. He also is a research fellow at the Oslo International Peace Research Institute.
Machida practiced at a conservative zen monastery for 20 years before coming to America. He received a master's degree from Harvard University's School of Divinity and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught at Princeton University, the National University of Singapore and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
Machida has appeared on a monthly Japanese national television program focusing on Buddhism in Japan. He conducts meditation and fasting retreats throughout Japan.
The event is sponsored by the Maui Buddhist Council.

'Listening to angels' topic of Jan. 12 talk
Fujiko Signs, an international speaker, practitioner and teacher of Christian Science healing, will give a free talk at 2 p.m. Jan. 12 at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, at 160 W. Kamehameha Ave. in Kahului.
Her talk is titled "Listening to angels, the message of love and healing."
According to an announcement, participants will hear how angels (divine messages) enable people to experience healing and transformation.

Pastor Wilke set to be at Door of Faith
Senior Pastor Norman Wilke from the Evangelistic Temple in Tulsa, Okla., will be teaching Wednesday through Jan. 12 at the Transformation School of Ministry held at the Wailuku Door of Faith Church at 432 Waiehu Beach Road.
He will teach leadership administration, the principles for healthy relationships and practical principles for an effective life-giving church.

Program will honor longest wed couples
The longest married couple in Hawaii is being sought by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, an original faith-based marriage enrichment program.
Hawaii's longest married couple, along with other long-time married couples from the other 49 states and the longest married couple in the nation will be presented with special gifts and certificates from WWME leaders and couples during Valentine's week in February.
The organization offers married couples tools for building and maintaining a strong, Christian marriage in today's world.
This year's Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekends in Hawaii are scheduled for Sept. 21-23 at the Maui Beach Hotel and Sept. 28-30 at the St. Anthony Retreat Center on Oahu.
Nominations for the longest married couple honors are open to all husband and wife couples regardless of faith expression. Couples may also nominate themselves for the honor.
