100 Years Ago

1913 - The prison gang got busy on Thursday morning, and soon cleaned up the streets. In places, the remains of firecrackers were an inch deep.

75 Years Ago

1938 - Ford V-8 cars for 1938 in the new DeLuxe model and Standard models make their debut on Maui today at Valley Isle Motors. The Standard car comes in both 60- and 85-horsepower motors and was designed for owners to whom economy is paramount.

50 Years Ago

1963 - As 1962 bowed out at midnight Monday, it could lay claim to being a banner year for an increase in tourist hotel accommodations on the Valley Isle. For the year's end saw 516 rooms, apartments or cottages ready for use by visitors at either long-existing hotels, lodges or inns, or as entirely new establishments.

1988 - David H. Murdock and Castle and Cooke set the course for Lanai's future with the groundbreaking for the 250-room, $50-million Manele Bay Hotel. "I'm proud to have a hand in bringing development to one of God's most beautiful creations," Murdock said during the ceremony.

10 Years Ago

2003 - The countdown for J.C. Penny on Maui is down to hours, with the Queen Ka`ahumanu Center store set to close its doors at noon Friday. "It's emotional. We're very sad," said Charisse Duyao, a worker with Penny's for seven of its eight years on Maui.
