Sip a little, cook or cleanse as you learn a lot at UH-Maui College’s culinary classes

This spring semester, UH Maui College will present a host its lifelong learning classes under the EdVenture name. The classes cover everything from health and fitness to art to food and beverage. Here's a rundown of what's available in the culinary world. Of course, you must be 21 and older to attend the wine tasting classes.

Wine Tasting Essentials

Horst Antosch teaches this one-time class from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 25 on the college campus. Wines and cheeses are included. Discover the wonders of wine in this hands-on class designed to educate you in all aspects of wine and proper wine etiquette. Get a brief history of wine, how it is grown and harvested, how to read labels, how to buy wine, how to store wine, and proper serving techniques. Become familiar with selecting and maintaining the appropriate glassware, discuss the aspects of cork versus cap, and what to do with a half finished bottle.

"After this class, you will feel more comfortable with wine and will be prepared to conduct your own wine tasting party with your family and friends," says Antosch.

Cost is $99 per person.

Pairing Wines with Food

The age old question is: Which wines go with what foods? Come and find out in this one-time class from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 1 that includes high-quality wines and a broad variety of foods. Through sampling wine and food together, you will gain an understanding of the best pairings and learn tricks of the trade from an experienced sommelier. Taste the difference between a decanted wine versus a wine from a bottle. Students interested in receiving a Wine Connoisseur Certificate will need to attend both Wine Tasting Essentials and Pairing Wine with Food classes as well as complete a short exam. Cost is $109.

Healthy Indian Cooking Made Easy

Learn how to cook the flavors of India from noon to 5 p.m. on Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, two Saturdays. Taught by Indu Burks, the class will teach you how to make naan, roti, samosas with chutney, curry, Masala, exotic rice dishes and more. Plus, learn to use spices which provide great health benefits while staying on a budget. Recipes are traditional and passed down through the generations. Cost is $144 per student.

Arthritis, A Natural Approach

One in five adults and half of those older than 65 have arthritis. Learn why certain foods aggravate and inflame joints in this three-time class from 9 to 11 a.m. starting Jan. 28. Taught by Steve Blake, the class will cover what spices and herbs reduce inflammation, which supplements can be helpful, and what food fats can reduce or increase our risk of arthritis pain. Learn which vitamins and minerals help build collagen to support healthy cartilage. Find out more about foods that support the lubrication of joints. This class is designed to teach how to regain mobility. Cost is $89.

Easter Cakelets - A Cake Decorating Class

Students will have fun decorating cakelets (fun shaped mini-cakes) in fondant in this one-time class from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 9. Instructor Tori Takayesu teaches work on a small scale for one-of-a-kind mini cakes in unique and creative shapes. Cakes are prebaked. Note: All materials are included. Cost is $109.

Cleanse, Rejuvenate: 4 Weeks to change your life!

Change your lifestyle patterns and set a new intention for vibrant health. Malik Cotter instructs you how to do a cleanse program that builds blood, cleanses the liver and colon, and breaks internal blockages and congestion, while learning lifestyle ways of healthy living in this eight-time class from 6 to 7:30 p.m. starting Feb. 14. Topics are food programs, herbal formulas, works, breathing, relaxation and attunement to nature's vital force. Cost is $149.
