Aspiring young scientists from middle and high schools will compete today in the third Maui Regional Science Olympiad on the University of Hawaii Maui College campus in Kahului.
Registration will be from 7:30 to 8 a.m., with the competition beginning at 8:15 a.m. at sites inside and outside of the college's Ka Lama Building. A closing ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the college's new science building, 'Ike Le'a.
"The event is aimed at fostering participation, learning and interaction while providing an atmosphere of fun and creating an interest in science, technology, engineering and math," said Flaviana Ancheta, the olympiad's director.
The top divisional finishers will advance to the March 2 state finals at Leeward Community College on Oahu.
