Maui Rep. Joe Souki was elected speaker of the state House of Representatives on Wednesday morning.
His approval came with some opposition during the vote.
State Rep. Sharon Har, who represents Makakilo and Kapolei on Oahu, said the resolution making Souki speaker espouses "revenge, retribution, vengeance and vindictiveness."
The 18 members supporting Souki's opponent state Rep. Marcus Oshiro, who had the blessing of outgoing Speaker Calvin Say, either voted no or with reservations.
