Paia has been named one of the "Top Ten Happiest Seaside Towns in America" by Coastal Living Magazine and could win top honors with help from the public.
Maui residents may vote for Paia on the website www.coastalliving.com/happytowns2013. Voting will continue until Feb. 28, when the winner will be selected. Votes may be cast hourly, every day.
Results will appear in Coastal Magazine's June issue that will go on sale May 17. The towns will be ranked from Nos. 1 to 10, and each will be featured as part of the magazine's cover story, "America's Happiest Seaside Towns."
The other towns are Beaufort, S.C.; Harwich Port, Mass.; Kennebunkport, Maine; La Jolla, Calif.; Newport, R.I.; Rowayton, Conn.; Pescadero, Calif.; Sag Harbor, N.Y.; and Sanibel Island, Fla.
Beaufort was in front in a check of the website Monday; Paia was eighth.
The towns were selected through nominations, and finalists were determined through a poll by the magazine's editors on which had the best "coastal vibe."
"Maui keeps getting recognized, and we couldn't be happier about it," said Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa. "Let's grab that number one spot by rallying family and friends to vote for Paia town."
