We the people should propose a constitutional amendment: Any elected or appointed official who proposes, sponsors, condones or otherwise supports any legislation that is counter to the spirit and/or letter of the Constitution will be stripped of office, required to repay all money gained while in that office and forever barred from further public office of any kind. Any salaried government worker shall also be required to attend and pass remedial civics lessons.
This will make politicians think twice before they act. It is up to the people (real people, not figments of a politician's imagination) to propose amendments and to ensure that the people who represent them do not hijack the process.
