FIRST PHOTO: During a community cleanup of the wetlands at Laie in Kihei on Saturday morning, Ilai Mataele carries a load of sticks. The Day of Service Project was part of efforts across America to give back to communities in conjunction with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and inauguration ceremonies for President Barack Obama. More than 80 people turned out to participate in clearing the 4-acre parcel of the non-native species so that native plant species can return.
SECOND PHOTO: Siaosi He (from left), Tali Vaha, Tevita Ika and Ofa Fue put their backs into removing non-native plants. He is the Troop Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 32.
THIRD PHOTO: Troop 32 Life Scout Tony Mafileo carries a load of debris. His cousin Asi Tongi, 17, helped organize the effort as part of his Eagle Scout project. "It feels great," Tongi said of the large turnout.
