Thoughts about tourism and wrongly named column

January 30, 2013
The Maui News

Two disparate thoughts occurred when reading the Jan. 25 Maui News.

I wonder what the visitors think when they read the monthly report on number of visitors and how much they spent. I would guess I was being chided for not bringing enough money, and maybe that Maui welcomes first-class tourists, but that the economy class should find another vacation location.

Columnist Ben Lowenthal obviously has his political agenda and is not afraid to express it. He gives dubious praise to those he agrees with and offers snide comments to those he does not. Lowenthal is certainly entitled to have his opinions published, but they should be on the paper's Op-Ed page, not in a column called "The State of Aloha," as it seems Lowenthal does not have much of that.
