Flippin’ for flapjacks

Photos: Children's Miracle Network Hospitals President and Chief Executive Officer John Lauck transfers a pancake from the griddle onto a plate held by IHOP Kahului General Manager Judith Tomas during National Pancake Day festivities Tuesday. IHOP restaurants nationwide offered each guest a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The Kahului restaurant served free pancakes all day for the Kapiolani Medical Center For Women and Children on Oahu. Last year, IHOPs across America served 4 million free pancakes while raising $3 million for local children's hospitals. (Folks who received the free cakes were asked to make a donation). Pancake Day is a tradition that dates back several centuries to when the English prepared for fasting during Lent. Lauck is on Maui taking part in the Ace Hardware Shootout being held in Kapalua. The golf event at the Kapalua Plantation and Bay courses features retired athletes from the Olympics, National Football League, National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball.
