Reading about our new Rep. Kaniela Ing bringing forth a bill to make smoking on Hawaii beaches illegal (The Maui News, Jan. 31), although well-intentioned, has less than a 50/50 chance of passing.
As a nonsmoker and nondrinking resident of Maui, I applaud his quest. However, I honestly believe there are many more issues that can be championed by Ing that can directly improve the health and well-being of the populace and the island.
Spending a night with the Kihei Community Association and/or asking the residents of Maui what they think is important will give our new representative several issues that might better serve, are more easily put into effect, are actually enforceable and have a greater impact on the quality of life on and for the island.
Our new representative has youth and energy on his side. Hopefully, he ventures forth to poll the residents as to their desires and needs. Thereafter, he can move forward to really make a difference and to stand out as a true leader for change and improvement.
