A man wanted on a sex assault charge in the United Kingdom and who eluded authorities for 22 years was taken into custody at a Kahului home Thursday evening.
Salvador Orozco, 48, was arrested without incident at about 9 p.m. at a Puunene Avenue address by the U.S. Marshals Hawaii Fugitive Task Force, which includes the Maui Police Department, a news release said.
He was wanted by law-enforcement authorities in Great Britain for one count of rape, one count of indecent assault and one count of attempted buggery.
SALVADOR OROZCO, eluded arrest for decades
The charges stem from an alleged attack and rape of a woman, who was on her way home, at a bus station in Great Britain the evening of May 17, 1990. After the incident, Orozco fled to the U.S., where he had eluded authorities for more than 22 years.
Last July, British Embassy officials sought the assistance of the U.S. Justice Department in locating, arresting and extraditing Orozco back to Great Britain. The investigation led to Hawaii, where the Hawaii Fugitive Task Force was able to locate Orozco on Maui, the news release from the U.S. Marshals Hawaii Fugitive Task Force said.
There were no details about where Orozco was being detained or his extradition.
The Hawaii Fugitive Task Force comprises the state sheriffs; Maui, Hawaii, Kauai and Honolulu police departments; state Attorney General's Office; and the Honolulu City and County Prosecutor's Office.
