County to mark new year

Maui County will celebrate the Chinese New Year of the snake at 9 a.m. on Friday on the front lawn of the Kalana O Maui Building.

The event will include firecrackers, martial arts exhibitions and lion dance performances. Red envelopes will be on hand for people to feed the lions and hopefully bring good luck in the new year. The envelopes will be available at the event and at the front desk of the mayor's office on the ninth floor.

State of the Union to air

President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address will be broadcast on KAOI Radio 1110 AM and 96.7 FM beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday, the radio stations announced.

The speech will mark the president's fifth State of the Union speech - and his first since being re-elected last year.

On Feb. 20 in the Baldwin High School auditorium, Mayor Alan Arakawa will deliver his State of the County Address from 5 to 6 p.m. (Doors will open at 4 p.m.)

The radio stations will carry the mayor's speech as well.

Plumbing processes topic

County Public Works engineers from the Plumbing Inspection Section will hold a "talk story" session to discuss changes to county permitting and inspection processes at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

County officials will meet with members of the plumbing contractors' community in the University of Hawaii Maui College's Kalama Building Room 103.

Officials will address issues and answer questions from contractors.

Park staff to discuss plans

Haleakala National Park will hold a public meeting to discuss new and pre-existing plans at 5 p.m. on Feb. 20, at the Kalena Triangle in Kipahulu.

Park staff members will provide updates on the Kipahulu Comprehensive Site Plan, which focuses on improving park operations, and the Commercial Services Plan, which will manage business operations.
