Turboprop service adopts 'Ohana name
Hawaiian Airlines' turboprop service, which will launch flights to Molokai and Lanai beginning this summer, will be named 'Ohana by Hawaiian.
"The name 'Ohana perfectly captures the idea behind this service and the role it will play in our community," said Mark Dunkerley, president and chief executive officer of Hawaiian Holdings. "This new service has always been about making it easier for friends and families throughout the islands and from overseas to share time together."
The brand name and aircraft design by artist and designer Sig Zane and his son, Kuha'o, were unveiled Monday at Honolulu International Airport.
'Ohana by Hawaiian will begin flights to Molokai and Lanai this summer with 48-seat ATR42 turboprop aircraft, said Hadden Watt, the operation's managing director. The flights will be run out of Gates 49 and 50 at Honolulu International by contractor Empire Airlines.
The new service will create up to an estimated 100 new Hawaii-based jobs, Watt said.
"Empire will be recruiting pilots, flight attendants and mechanics," he said. "The new service will also need contracted ground-handling and customer service positions on Molokai and Lanai."
Reservations and sales for 'Ohana by Hawaiian will be handled by Hawaiian Airlines.

Lahaina brush fire burns quarter-acre
A brush fire above Puamana in Lahaina burned about a quarter-acre before it was extinguished Sunday night, a fire official said.
Lahaina engine, ladder and tanker companies responded to the 8:17 p.m. report, finding a 30-by-40-foot area burning, said Capt. Paul Haake. He said there previously have been fires in the area where there's a homeless camp.
The fire was extinguished within two hours. No injuries or damage was reported.

UH-MC to host One Billion Rising event
A One Billion Rising gathering will be held at noon Thursday at the University of Hawaii Maui College, as part of a global movement to raise awareness to end violence against women and girls.
The event will run through 2 p.m. on the Great Lawn at the campus.
The event will include dances and group activities.
In addition, some campus classes will participate in a one-minute stand-and-rise activity focusing attention on gender-based violence.
The UH-MC Ponolove Sexual Violence Prevention Task Force, Active Minds Club, UH Women's Center and Women Helping Women are joining in the event.
