An opportunity for residents to explore art will be available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the University of Hawaii Maui College during the third annual free Open Studios event.
UH-Maui College faculty and students will demonstrate a variety of artistic techniques in the college's two spacious art studios housed in the Heona Building. There also will be a display of art created by faculty and staff. Finished work will be available for purchase.
"I had no idea that the ceramics class would lead to a dramatic and positive impact on my continuing education and my personal life," said student Kel Sampels. "Every day I look forward to what I will learn. I have great aspirations of becoming a professional potter."
University of Hawaii Maui College students (from left) Hare Evison, Rosangela Stone, Nalani Ai, and Xavier Tongson are shown outside the Heona Building on the school campus. In addition to hands-on activities for guests, the third annual Open Studios event will feature the finished work of student artists.
The college's art program offers a comprehensive foundation of art appreciation and studio courses for beginning, intermediate and continuing education students. Instructor Jennifer Owen got her artistic start at Princeton University and her work in ceramics was recently featured at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
Instructor Mike Takemoto received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He went on to achieve masters degrees in art from Northern Illinois University. His work has been exhibited at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the Honolulu Museum of Art.
"We're excited to be a part of Open Studios this year," said Takemoto. "People don't often get to see the artist at work, and this event gives them a glimpse into the process, not just the result of artistic expression. And it's experiential too, which is a key part of our own art program. We encourage everyone to leave with paint on their fingers."
