Not going easily

Excavator operator Jeremy Betsill (left) of Betsill Brothers Construction Inc. uses a hydraulic ram as he tries to bring down the last intact, vertical section of the old Wailuku Post Office Building on Wednesday morning. Despite attacking the reinforced concrete structure from three sides, pulverizing its walls, the building still resisted going down. The structure built with the side purpose of bomb shelter in 1959 may have been plagued by crumbling concrete facades and a leaky roof, but it was engineered with so much rebar it has proved a challenge to demolish. Demolition work was 60 percent completed as of Wednesday, with a basement still remaining to be demolished, said Ryan Piros, a Maui County spokesman. The project is expected to be finished by Feb. 27.
