Events planned for festival of Purim
The Jewish Congregation of Maui will celebrate the festival of Purim at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Beit Shalom Synagogue in Kihei.
The event will include a contemporary reading of the Megillah by children from the Jewish School of Maui.
The celebration follows a morning-to-evening fast on Thursday.
At 9:30 a.m. Feb. 24, the morning service will be followed by a traditional reading of Torah and the Megillah. Those attending are invited to dress in costume and bring mishloach manot, or small baskets of food, to give to friends.
The congregation also will be collecting packaged and canned food for the Maui Food Bank. Food can be dropped off at the synagogue at 634 Alulike St., behind the Maui Lu Resort.

Churches add Mass, Lenten devotions
Maria Lanakila and Sacred Heart Mission churches in Lahaina are hosting Lenten Catholic devotions until Easter.
Maria Lanakila will hold an additional daily Mass at noon Mondays through Fridays. The regular Mass is held at 7 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held Fridays, beginning today, from 7:30 a.m. to noon, through March 22 at Maria Lanakila Church.
Stations of the Cross will also be held Fridays, also beginning today, at both churches through March 22. The services will be held at noon at Sacred Hearts and at 6:30 p.m. at Maria Lanakila.
After the service, there will be an opportunity for personal Sacrament of Reconciliation with the priest at both locations.
Beginning Feb. 27, a Bible study called "The Creed" will be held every Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the St. Marianne Hall at Sacred Hearts School. It is a 12-week program.

'Surf the Nations' at Maui church today
"Surf the Nations" from Oahu will be ministering at 7 p.m. today at the AMP Church at 349 Hanakai St. in Kahului.
Surf the Nations travels around the world sharing the love of Jesus with the passion of surfing, a release said.
