Man being held on sex assault charges

A 29-year-old Kahului man was being held on $126,000 bail Tuesday morning at the Wailuku Police Station on charges relating to a sexual assault on a Wailuku woman Friday, police said.

Tosuo Hans was charged with first-degree sexual assault, first-degree burglary, kidnapping and six counts each of contempt of court, police records show.

Around 1:20 a.m. Friday, a 30-year-old Wailuku woman came out of her bathroom after taking a shower and saw a man who had entered her apartment without permission, said acting Lt. Richard Rodriguez of the Criminal Investigation Division in Wailuku.

The man pushed the woman into the bedroom where he sexually assaulted her, Rodriguez said.

The woman then fought off the man and screamed, causing the man to flee, he added.

The victim called police later Friday. Hans was arrested at 2:19 a.m. Saturday at a nearby apartment in Wailuku, Rodriguez said.

Chipping machine destroyed in blaze

A fire destroyed a tree-chipping machine in Kahului on Sunday afternoon, causing $17,000 in damage, fire officials said.

Although the fire was classified as undetermined, it appeared to have been intentionally set, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Maui police are continuing the investigation, he said.

The Wailuku and Kahului fire crews were dispatched to 155 Wakea Ave. at 3:59 p.m. Sunday. When crews arrived in the parking lot of the Easter Seals property, they found the machine engulfed in flames.

The fire was under control at 4:10 p.m. and extinguished at 5:25 p.m., Mainaga said.

There were no reports of injuries.
