The Portuguese Association of Maui is accepting scholarship applications for two grants of $1,000 each, which will be awarded to students entering college or already enrolled in an accredited academic or vocational institution.
Applicants must be of Portuguese or part-Portuguese descent and must be permanent residents of Maui County.
Applicants are required to complete the association's application form, furnish a recent school transcript, submit two letters of reference from people other than relatives and provide a one-page essay explaining reasons for applying for this particular grant.
Applications are available from high school counselors, from the Educational Opportunity Center at the University of Hawaii Maui College or can be requested in writing to the Portuguese Association of Maui, P.O. Box 838, Wailuku 96793. The deadline to apply is March 31.
The Portuguese Association began awarding scholarships in 2003. To date, the association has given $31,500 in scholarship grants to 32 Maui scholars.
The Portuguese Association of Maui was formed in 2002 for the purpose of preserving and perpetuating Portuguese cultural practices on Maui. Membership in the association is open to all interested persons regardless of ethnicity.
