"Work crews were able to begin removing the mud and cleaning the park today because of the clear weather," a county news release Monday said. "A date to reopen the park will depend on weather conditions later this week."

The park has been closed since Friday, when heavy rains the day before coated the parking lot, restrooms and pavilion in mud, the county said.

Wind advisory for Lanai, Maui

Windy conditions have led to the posting of a wind advisory for Lanai and parts of Maui, and a gale warning in the channels today and Wednesday.

The strong trade winds also prompted the National Weather Service to extended its high-surf advisory for east-facing shores of all islands until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Surf is expected to be 6 to 9 feet.

The wind advisory from 6 a.m. today to 6 p.m. Wednesday is for Lanai, Maui's central valley, the summit of Haleakala and Kahoolawe.

A strengthening high pressure system north of the islands is to blame for the gusty trades.

Strong winds also will make sailing in the channels dicey. A gale warning has been posted for Maalaea Bay, the Pailolo Channel between Maui and Molokai and the Alenuihaha Channel between Maui and the Big Island from 6 a.m. today to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Beginning this morning, east winds will blow up to 35 knots with seas 14 to 16 feet. Strong winds and rough seas are expected for all Hawaiian waters, the National Weather Service said.
