The University of Hawaii baseball team had its longest losing streak to open the season extended to eight games on Monday, with Rice winning 5-0 at Murakami Stadium in Honolulu to complete a sweep of a four-game series.
The Rainbows, shut out for the third time this year, are one loss away from matching the longest overall losing streak in team history - the 1997 and 2001 teams each lost nine games in a row.
Michael Aquino hit a two-run homer for the Owls (6-2), ranked 13th in the country by Baseball America, and finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
John Simms (3-0) went six innings for the win, and Blake Fox completed the seven-hitter for his first save.
Quintin Torres-Costa (0-2) permitted three runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Hawaii is next scheduled to play in the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas, opening with a game against Loyola Marymount on Thursday.
