Lunas win every game of opener

The Lahainaluna High School girls tennis team began its bid for a second straight Maui Interscholastic League championship by not losing a game in a 5-0 victory over Maui Prep on Wednesday at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch.

Nicole Aceret, an MIL doubles finalist last year, won in singles, as did Maile Amine and Amanda Mortimore. The doubles teams of Ezra Bacear and Charrie Dugue, and Lakiesha Ching and Aja Tocano, completed the sweep.

Na Pueo were also playing their first match of the season.

* MAUI HIGH GIRLS 4, ST. ANTHONY 1: At Kahului Community Center, a doubles sweep helped Maui High win in both teams' first match of 2013.

L.J. Gabiana and Shanelle Kaaikala defeated Alice Rossman and Sarah Nolette 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Genica Mae Aban and Le Ah Lee won 6-0, 6-1 over Emily Ferreia and Rilee Gebermann.

* BALDWIN GIRLS 3, KING KEKAULIKE 2: At Wells Park, Baldwin's Tayler Duarte, part of last year's MIL champion doubles team, joined Jessica Pressman for a 6-4, 6-2 win over Riley Calvan and Kisa Geibink at No. 1 doubles in the season opener for both schools.

* KAMEHAMEHA MAUI GIRLS 4, SEABURY HALL 1 (TUESDAY): At Pukalani, a sweep of doubles play helped Kamehameha Maui to a win on the first day of the MIL season.

Brandi Silva and Kelcey Lorenzo beat Shayla Hoeft and Lauralei Singsank 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and at No. 2, Mikayla Lau and Mehana Fisher were 6-3, 6-0 winners over Jackie Golden and Anna Ezzy.

* LAHAINALUNA BOYS 3, MAUI PREP 2: At the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch, Lahainaluna won all three matches in which it sent players to the court in the first match of the season for both teams.

Max Linder won 7-6, 6-0 over Mehran Karimabodi at No. 1 singles, Jarret Pascual recorded a 7-5, 6-1 win over John Caputo at No. 2 and the No. 1 doubles team of Jordan Baclay and Jake Francis defeated Lyndon Wilfur and Corey McMurray 6-0, 6-2.

* MAUI HIGH BOYS 5, ST. ANTHONY 0: At Kahului Community Center, Maui High swept the opening match of both teams' seasons.

In singles, the Sabers' Joey Baldwin, Devan Kepler and Brandon Thompson combined to drop just five games.

* KING KEKAULIKE BOYS 3, BALDWIN 2: At Wells Park, Joshua Demetropolis' victory at No. 2 singles and two wins by default sent King Kekaulike past last year's MIL team champion.

Demetropolis defeated Riley Caldwell 6-2, 6-2.

Both teams were playing their league openers.

* SEABURY HALL BOYS 4, KAMEHAMEHA MAUI 1 (TUESDAY): At Pukalani, Seabury Hall did not drop a set in singles plays on opening day in the MIL.

Shun Harima beat Devonte Llanes 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Nalu Ehman defeated Kona Dancil 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 and Bjorn Nelson won 6-3, 6-1 over Bryson Funai at No. 3.
