Ching will be player-assistant coach for Dynamo

HOUSTON (AP) - Houston Dynamo forward Brian Ching will serve as a player and assistant coach under a new contract announced by the team on Friday.

The 34-year-old Ching, a Kamehameha Schools Kapalama graduate from Haleiwa, Oahu, is an original member of the Dynamo and the franchise's career leader in goals (69). He plans to retire after this season.

The six-time Major League Soccer All-Star also has 11 goals in 45 appearances with the U.S. national team.

In 2006, the Dynamo franchise's inaugural season in Houston, Ching scored 11 goals. He led the Dynamo to the MLS championship that season and was named the MVP in the MLS Cup. Last season, he played in a career-high 30 games and finished with five goals and five assists.
