100 Years Ago

1913 - Within a short time from now, the Haiku Fruit and Packing plant will be doubled in capacity. A cannery, twice as large as the present one, will be erected and modern machinery will be installed. Railroad tracks will run right into the warehouses.

75 Years Ago

1938 - An interesting addition to Maui's historical literature is the most recent Maui Hi-Notes supplement outlining in 52 pages the history of the school. The booklet is the first undertaking of its kind attempted on Maui.

50 Years Ago

1963 - Representative Elmer F. Cravalho of Waiakoa, speaker of Hawaii's House of Representatives, has been named 1963 winner of the national 4-H Club alumni recognition award. The political leader is the first winner from Hawaii.

25 Years Ago

1988 - Mayor Hannibal Tavares this morning said any business that tries to tear down the Iao Theatre or use it for commercial shops will have to deal with his administration. "Anyone dealing in this area is going to have a rough time with me," Tavares said.

2003 - Warm banana bread and chilly shave ice cones have sealed Nita Chong's reputation as a prime person to visit en route to Hana. Chong enters her 20th year as proprietor of Keanae's Halfway to Hana roadside stand
