A man who died Sunday in the waters off Charley Young Beach has been identified.
Dr. John Withers, 79, of Kihei was reportedly found facedown in the water, floating on the north end of the beach at about 12:35 p.m., said police.
A witness told police that he saw a man in snorkel gear floating about 20 feet from the shore. After 10 minutes and repeated attempts to get the man's attention, he swam out and brought him to shore, while a bystander contacted police.
Withers was pronounced dead at 1:40 p.m., police said.
The witness told police that he saw Withers snorkeling alone on two different occasions earlier in the day, with police finding Withers' towel, slippers and other belongings on the beach.
Withers appeared to have no external injuries, and police have reported no signs of foul play.
The cause of death is still under investigation, police said.
