March 8, 2013
The Maui News
The Hawaiian stilt, or ae‘o, can be found at Kanaha Pond. This photo was taken Feb. 28. The endangered ae‘o is a slender wading bird that grows up to 15 inches. The Hawaiian subspecies differs from the North American stilt in that it has a blacker face and neck and longer bill, tarsus and tail, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
