The ‘easy-does-it’ Pukalani Superette gets new chef, plans to expand menu

The Maui News

Back in the 1920s, it was called Tanizaki Store. Then in 1955, it was incorporated and renamed Pukalani Superette.

"We've always been known as the 'easy-does-it' store," says Jerry Masaki, general manager. "Because we have friendly aloha service, and nobody's in a rush. Our store gives you a feel of what Maui used to be like. All relaxed and hassle free."

Now, Pukalani Superette has hired Michael Umetsu, who was a chef for years at Celebrations Catering owned by Beverly Gannon.

New Chef Mike Umetsu worked at Celebrations Catering for years and now he’ll upgrade the menu at the historic store and add new items. Enjoy fresh corned beef and cabbage on St. Paddy’s Day.

"Mike's got a vision. He's mixed it up with the big boys. He's going to take Pukalani Superette to the next level," says Masaki.

"We're shifting our focus to offer more prepared foods. We'll add health foods. If you see Mike in the store, walk up and tell him what kind of foods you want him to make," adds Masaki.

For now, expect the same great food such as chili chicken, salted cucumber, potato-mac salad, laulau and more. For St. Paddy's Day, you may buy corned beef and cabbage for $9.99 a pound.

Pukalani Superette is also very community minded and is raising money for the Firefighters Fund, with proceeds going to Hawaii firefighters. You may make donations at the cash register. For more details, call the easy-does-it store at 572-7616.
