The New Black: Black & White Photography Exhibition is now on display at Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao. It will run through May 3.
In our modern world of fast moving images and bold colors, we seldom take a moment to pause and look deeper at the form and rhythm of the world around us. The goal of this unique juried exhibition is to challenge artists to take this pause and explore beyond the realm of color into shades of gray from the deepest blacks to the brightest whites.

Art lovers and recycling advocates are invited to participate in the annual Art of Trash 2013. Each year, show organizers hope to push the artistic envelope to relay messages of stewardship.
Artists are encouraged to start collecting recyclable materials that will inspire their art pieces. Note that driftwood pieces, water feature pieces and works that include food are not accepted.
Exhibit organizers will receive work between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on April 13 at Maui Mall, in the space next to Thailand Cuisine. Entry fee is $10 per piece.

The Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational recently announced the winners of its 8th annual event held Feb. 16 through 24 at locations throughout Maui.
Ken Auster captured the "Best of Show" painting and a $1,000 check. Other artists who earned top honors were: Colin Page for "Artist Choice Award"; Randall Sexton for "The Irvine Museum Award"; Scott Prior for "Makana Aloha Foundation Award"; Thomas Jefferson Kitts for "Pioneer Inn Quickdraw Award"; Ken Auster for "Pacific'O Restaurant Award"; Ronaldo Macedo for "County of Maui Office of
Economic Development/Hawaii Tourism Authority Award"; Michael Clements for "Maui No Ka 'Oi Magazine Award"; Carleton for "Kaanapali Land Management Corp. Award"; Pierre Bouret for "Honor Hawaii, Honor Maui Award." In addition, Michael Clements, Colin Page, and Scott Prior received Honorable Mentions.
A total of 25 prominent artists from the Mainland and Hawaii participated in the invitational.
"While artists took coveted honors, the real winner of this invitational was the community who experienced it," said event coordinator Rhonda Pang.
