March 16, 2013
The Maui News
Pualalea Kalama Demello, 3, donates money to the American Red Cross on Friday afternoon outside Walmart in Kahului. She made her donation as part of the organization’s annual Hats Off fundraiser, which received help from off-duty firefighters, members of the military and other volunteers. Volunteer organizer Barbara Jean Eberly said that donations stay with the Hawaii Chapter and fund disaster relief efforts caused by natural disasters, fires and other emergencies. The Red Cross receives no government funding. Eberly said that the organization hopes to raise $5,000 at the Walmart location. Volunteers are collecting donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m through Sunday at Walmart, and today only at Whole Foods Market at Maui Mall, Hasegawa General Store in Hana and Friendly Market Center on Molokai.
