I had to pause in traffic on a recent morning in front of Kamali'i Elementary, and noticed for the first time the mural on the building facing Alanui Ke Alii Street. It depicts several children of different races holding hands under the motto "Live Pono." Eileen Parkman (The Maui News, March 10) certainly lives up to that and more. That she then had suffered repeated abuse from a handful bullies for her courage is shameful.
I live two blocks from the school and pass it a couple times a day. Whenever I see that mural I'll remember the bravery of a young girl and wonder at the hapless administration staff that forced her out of her school to escape further abuse because of her courageous act.
