More than 50 volunteers showed up recently at Lahaina's Wahikuli Wayside Park to learn how to build a rain garden. This was the hands-on portion of the two-day workshop that began March 15. There were members of county government, landscaping companies, marine and gardening nonprofit groups, and residents at the event. Rain gardens intercept and treat shower runoff and are a flat-bottomed depression, planted with native plants. The garden at Wahikuli was intended as a demonstration project. The workshop was sponsored by the county Department of Parks and Recreation and the West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative.
