Somos Ohana Nicaragua will hold its annual charity rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Pukalani Elementary School cafeteria at 2945 Iolani St.
Proceeds from the sale will support projects the organization supports in Villanueva, Nicaragua.
Items at the rummage will include collectibles, art, household articles, baby and sports equipments, plants, clothing and a "country store" of fruits and vegetables.
La Carreta secondary school teacher Martin Carazo (from left), his daughter, Anita, and his son, Santos (who is a teacher at La Consulta primary school), are shown with books for both schools and bikes for the high school. The items were donated by Somos Ohana Nicaragua.
Dan and Charlotte Flavin, founders of the Pukalani-based nonprofit, and other Maui volunteers will hold their second annual two-week day camp in July for children and young adults with special needs during the group's 14th consecutive summer in Nicaragua.
The camp is an addition to the organization's ongoing delivery of physical therapy services by Maui volunteer Jim Kahler and distribution of transportation scholarships. These include bus transportation for college students and cancer patients from their rural villages to the city of Chinandega, and bikes for kids who otherwise would have one- and two-hour walks to the regional high school.
The group has already provided 65 bikes and intends to provide 25 more this summer. The successful bike program includes a commitment by students and their families to school attendance, which is leading to improved graduation rates.
Somos Ohana Nicaragua is seeking volunteers and donations to continue their projects. The ability to communicate in Spanish is very valuable, but those volunteers committed to going who need to learn basic Spanish will be given lessons prior to the trip.
All donations to the group are used for the programs in Nicaragua, and therefore volunteers pay for their airfare and a modest daily room and board fee in country. Interested people may call the organization's president, Charlotte Flavin, at 572-9898.
