Volunteer emergency responders learn the ropes

April 15, 2013

Community Emergency Response Teams volunteers (clockwise from left foreground) Kristine Armstrong, Deb Lombard, Andrea Chapman, Buck Joiner and Bob Lombard prepare to roll Maui High junior Vanessa DeCambra, 16, off a stretcher during a training exercise on the school’s Kahului campus Saturday afternoon. The four-part skills exercise was designed to give community volunteers the skills they would need to help themselves and their neighbors in the event of a wide-scale disaster. If the island’s traditional first responders are overwhelmed by a disaster, possibly a major earthquake or tsunami, community members will need to step up and fill the void, explained CERT instructor Paul Kaneshiro. “It becomes neighbor helping neighbor,” Kaneshiro said. “If they don’t know what to do, they can hurt themselves or the people they are trying to help.”
