Maui voters, where is your outrage?
Once again the Maui County Salary Commission has made our County Council the highest paid in the entire state of Hawaii.
The Maui County Council makes more than their counterparts in Honolulu County in spite of the fact that Honolulu government supports more than six times Maui's population and more than four times Maui's number of government employees.
How are these latest increases justified? The most basic of compensation analysis rules is "similar pay for similar jobs."
As to the argument of paying more to encourage "good" leadership, we've heard that in one form or another at least three times in the 15 years I've lived on Maui. It hasn't worked yet.
Thinking the same action repeated many times will produce different results is the literal definition of insanity. So what are we doing?
Just as so many are calling for objective performance evaluations for our teachers, so should we be calling for them for our government elected and appointed officials. In a veritable stagnant economy like ours, we can't afford to give our tax dollars away just because a committee felt like it.
So, Maui voters, where is your outrage?
