Speaker to tackle employee unions
Hawaiian Carpet One owner Myles Kawakami will speak on the "Greatest Threat to Democracy" during a noon Thursday meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Maui at Eddie and Cary's Hideaway restaurant in Kahului.
An announcement of the event identifies the "threat" as "public employee unions."
Lunch costs $12, and the meeting is open to the general public.

Social hour for conservatives
Conservatives from across Maui are invited to a get together for a social hour (or two) with like- minded people at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Pizza in Paradise, 60 E. Wakea Ave.
The event is for fellowship, conversation and networking.
Celebration set for community garden
The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui at the University of Hawaii Maui College announces the grand opening of the SLIM UH-Maui College Community Garden from 4 to 6 p.m. May 2.
Hundreds of volunteers helped to create the garden. The public is invited to attend the celebration. There will be fresh produce and drinks provided, tours of the garden, and recognition of sponsors and volunteers. For further information, call 984-3379.
