A fire burned about 8,000 square feet along Mahalani Street downslope from Hospice Maui near Maui Lani on Friday afternoon.
Four fire units responded to the brush fire at about 2 p.m.
Firefighters took up positions to protect the Hospice Maui buildings, said Capt. Paul Haake of the Fire Prevention Bureau. No other structures were threatened.
Workers at Hospice Maui initially were unaware of the fire less than 50 feet from their offices. Nearby residents called the facility when they saw the fire spread up the hill.
"Somebody called us and said 'your hill is on fire,' " said Hospice Development Director Kimberly Howard-Carhart on Friday afternoon. "I'm glad they called because our place would've gone up like that."
The fire, between a Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course fairway and Mahalani Street, was not threatening enough to have the facility evacuated.
The blaze was extinguished at about 2:30 p.m., said Haake.
There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire was undetermined.
