1913 - The police have been watching an alleged opium "joint" at Kahului. It has been pretty well known that the dope has been sold there, but evidence to convict has not been available. However, a raid was made on Thursday night and a man was arrested. Plenty of the poppy juice was found and it was, of course, confiscated.

1938 - Maui's 1938 May Day celebration stretched out over an entire weekend, ending on Monday night with a colorful Hawaiian pageant presented by the Wailuku High School at Wells Park and included a gala holoku ball, a garden party, and celebrations in the major communities. Schools observed the occasion and in most localities, the crowning of the May Queen was the climactic event.

1963 - Maui residents and visitors will have an opportunity to see beautiful lei and authentic Hawaiian entertainment in Lahaina this Saturday when the Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club holds its annual lei contest. The club is planning an afternoon of continuous entertainment provided by local residents, including members of the Central Maui Hawaiian Civic Club, the Hawaiian Civic Club and Emma Sharpe's well known hula troupe.

1988 - C. Brewer has sold its Waihee Dairy property to a company controlled by famous Japanese golf professional Atsushi "Tommy" Nakajima and his family. Most of the land would be used for a golf course.

2003 - For a Baldwin High School junior, a hands-on lesson in carving a canoe from a raw log has been a spiritual experience. Monica Tagalan, 16, one of a number of students from Baldwin and Lahainaluna high schools, said the International Festival of Canoes has been a rare chance to have a cultural experience that also taught her new skills.
