Maui surfers take four titles at HASA championships
Four competitors from Maui won titles in the Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association state championships that took place April 22-27 at Oahu's Ala Moana Bowls.
Mack Crilley finished first in boys 15-17 bodyboard, Summer Macedo in girls 12-13 shortboard, Cole Alves in boys 11 and under shortboard and Noah Yap in open stand-up.
Yap was also second in boys 17 and under stand-up, and Crilley was the runner-up in open drop-knee and boys 17 and under longboard. Ronaldo Macedo (senior men's longboard), Sierra Lerback (girls 17 and under longboard), Kain Daly (boys 16-17 shortboard), Logan Bediamol (boys 12-13 shortboard) and Jackson Bunch (boys 11 and under shortboard) earned second-place finishes as well. Joao Marco Maffini was third in boys 16-17 shortboard. Serene Gunnison (girls 16-17 shortboard), Miles Serafica (boys 17 and under longboard), Cody Young (boys 12-13 shortboard) and Eli Hanneman (boys 11 and under shortboard) were fourth.
Four teams from Maui place second in HYSA State Cup
The Maui United 96 boys team finished second in the Hawaii Youth Soccer Association State Cup last weekend at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on Oahu, but earned a wild card to the Far West regional scheduled for June, also on Oahu.
Maui United played the Honolulu Bulls to a 1-1 draw in the final, needing a win in that match for the under-17 division title. Both teams went 2-0-1 in the tournament.
Maui United was seeking a fourth state-wide championship.
In the under-15 final, Maui Elite, which claimed a State Cup two years ago, fell 3-2 to the Riggers.
Maui United 97 lost 1-0 to Bulls 97 in the under-16 title match. The Maui Strikers took third in the division.
The under-12 Wailuku Bruisers placed second following a 1-0 loss to Bulls Kaula.
All three second-place teams are eligible to compete in the Presidents Cup, scheduled for June in Boise, Idaho.
The under-14 Maui United 99 Red and under-13 Excel teams finished third.
