Russia comes to Maui

May 19, 2013
The Maui News
Members of the New York-based Russian song/dance troupe Barynya serenade retired Lahaina physician Helen Percy (sitting) at her 90th birthday party May 5 at the Ka‘anapali Beach Hotel. Elina Kharokina, Alexander Rudoy, Valentina Kvasova and Mikhail Smirnov helped make the day special for Percy, who was born in Atlanta to Russian parents who had fled revolution in their homeland. Percy spoke only Russian until she was 5 years old and remains fluent in the language. Despite having traveled all over the world, she has never made it to Russia. “So we thought on this special occasion, we’d bring Russia to her,” said her daughter, Lahaina attorney Valentina Stewart Watson. The 90 guests dined on Russian food. Percy came to Maui in 1968 and was with Maui Medical Group for 43 years until her retirement in September 2011.
