A 24-year-old Wailuku man who was arrested in an attack on another man in the Piihana Farms area of Wailuku has been released pending further investigation, police said.
The attack occurred at about 9 a.m. May 4 when a Kahului man reported driving a woman to the Piihana housing area and being confronted by two men from a low-rider truck. After he drove down Piihana Road to get away, the victim said he was blocked in by the truck and approached by two men. One man shot the back passenger window of the car and the other man used a rock to hit the driver's side window and strike the driver before he managed to drive away, police said.
The man wielding the rock had told the driver to get out of the car and leave the key, police said.
The suspect who was suspected of firing a shotgun at the car was released Monday, police said.
Another suspect, Erath Kaihewalu, 20, of Waiehu was identified as the man who used the rock to strike the driver during a preliminary hearing last week in Wailuku District Court. Kaihewalu's bail was set at $50,000 on charges of first-degree robbery, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, first-degree criminal property damage, keeping a loaded firearm in an improper place and first-degree terroristic threatening.
A judge ruled there wasn't enough evidence to support charges against Kyle Keahi, 26, of Wailuku. He was identified as the driver of the truck and had been charged as an accomplice in the case.
