Combustible compost burns at landfill

The Maui Fire Department’s Air One helicopter flies above smoke from a compost fire at the Central Maui Landfill on Sunday afternoon. Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga reported that 2 acres of compost were involved in the blaze, which was reported at 2:30 p.m. As of 5:40 p.m. Sunday, the fire permiter was contained but there was still active burning. Fire units from Kahului and Kula as well as state airport firefighters, a county Public Works tanker and two bulldozers and a tanker from the landfill remained on the scene, Mainaga said. / KEVIN JOHN OLSON photo
