Recently, watching a planning commission hearing, I was surprised to hear the Hawaiian place name Launiupoko repeatedly mispronounced.
I'm not so naive as to think we can control how people pronounce words, but county employees working for the Planning Department should be able to pronounce the Hawaiian place name.
Mispronouncing Hawaiian place names or changing then to English is a form of cultural theft. It alienates native people from the environment.
