‘Good run’ for racing sailboat

June 11, 2013
The Maui News
Kihei boat owners Chris and Christy Birchard lower their 24-foot vessel’s mast while taking their Corsair racing sailboat out of the water for the last time a week ago at Maalaea Harbor. Christy Birchard said the couple decided to sell the boat after officials from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources forced them to abandon a mooring in front of Menehune Shores in Kihei. She said she and her husband have used the mooring for 28 years, but state officials told them they could no longer use the mooring because it was too close to shore. Chris Birchard, a former commercial fisherman in Alaska, said he is ready to move on. “It’s been a good run,” he said. “I’ve been at sea since I was 20, that’s 45 years. It’s time.”
