Awai-Dickson an all-around champ

Kanoa Awai-Dickson competes in steer wrestling en route to winning the event and taking the all-around cowboy title in the Hawaii High School Rodeo State Championship, which took place May 30-June 1 at Parker Ranch on the Big Island. Awai-Dickson was also named the state’s top rookie, and won the tandem roping title with Maui teammate Kaena Poouahi, who received the “Hawaii’s Own' all-around cowboy honor, and was the po‘o wai u champion. Liloa Akoi took the girls goat-tying title, and Lauren Egger received the sportsmanship award. Awai-Dickson also finished second in tie-down roping, and in double mugging with Poouahi, while placing third in cutting. Kaulana Funes was second in bull riding and fourth in double mugging, and Akoi was third in barrel racing, fifth in the all-around cowgirl competition and seventh in breakaway roping, and was the rodeo queen first runner-up. Nikki Baroso was sixth in cutting, and Kacey Kono was eighth in pole bending.
