FIRST PHOTO: Three competitors pedal up the slope of Haleakala on Saturday during the Cycle to the Sun. The race, which takes riders from sea level at Paia to the summit of the inactive volcano, across 36 miles of road and to an elevation of 10,023 feet, had 186 participants, with Tomoyuki Inui of Japan finishing first in 2 hours, 57 minutes, 59.43 seconds. The women's winner was Trina Van Dyck of Canada, in 3:37:23.74, and the winning relay team was SMB Ascension - Forest Treadwell of Kihei, Peter Salomon of Haiku and Matt Watson of Kula combined for a time of 3:01:49.74.
