Some areas of Wailuku town will be without water service from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, the county Department of Water Supply announced Friday.
The outage is planned to make way for the replacement of waterlines on Nani, Loke, Wailani and Kaniela streets, water officials said. The work is aimed at replacing undersized waterlines that are insufficient for fire protection.
All of the residents of Loke, Nani and Wailani streets can expect a water outage, the announcement said. Those on Kaniela Street from Main Street to Vineyard Street will be affected as well as Mission Street residents from Lower Main Street to Vineyard Street and Vineyard Street residents and businesses from Central Avenue to Mission Street.
Traffic will be affected at the intersections of Vineyard and Wailani, Vineyard and Kaniela, Kaniela and East Main streets and on Loke and Nani streets. Only local traffic will be permitted in the area. Motorists should use alternate routes during the project.
Work on the waterline replacement began in February and should be completed in October.
Following the work, customers should flush their waterlines for a short time Wednesday morning to ensure that no sediment has accumulated in their waterlines. Affected customers also should store water for the night if needed.
The water department's 24-hour service line is 270-7633.
