Tending to ‘Five Trees’

July 12, 2013
The Maui News
Demie Fernandez tends to the gardens recently at the “Five Trees” intersection at Haleakala and Kula highways. The gardens are a tribute to George Fernandez (no relation to Demie) and the Road Cantoneers of the Territory of Hawaii. The five jacaranda trees are also a testament to the community action that saved them after state Department of Transportation engineers announced plans to remove two of the trees as part of a road realignment in 1992. The trees were saved, but one ended up dying during the nearby construction. Though the tree was replaced, it was sickly and the triangular junction had fallen into disrepair. Then, the family of George Fernandez adopted the parcel and transformed it into a tiny park. Demie Fernandez said that the family hired her to tend to the grass and flowers. Helping her was Octavio Gutierrez.
