Man stable after being shot by Big Isle officer

July 24, 2013
The Associated Press

KAILUA-KONA (AP) - Hawaii County police said an officer shot and injured an apparently suicidal man who refused to put down a rifle.

Police said the man was shot in his right shoulder and is in stable condition at Kona Community Hospital.

Police had responded to a report of an attempted suicide at a Kailua-Kona home Monday night. Officers found a 33-year-old man outside holding a rifle. Police said he refused instructions to put the weapon down and attempted to use it on himself.

That's when an officer fired his gun, striking the man in the shoulder. The officer is a 31-year-old, eight-year veteran of the police force.

The department will conduct an internal investigation.
